Stavanger Ysteri: OlssønBarbieri Packaging Design
OlssønBarbieri crafted tactile packaging design for Stavanger Ysteri, pairing debossed circular labels with mythological linework.
Stavanger Ysteri makes raw milk cheese in the heart of Stavanger. The urban factory sits in the city's historic fish canning district. Founder Lise Brunborg brings a unique path to dairy craft. She holds a degree in physics and a master's in chèvre. She sources fresh unpasteurised milk daily from Leikvoll Økologiske Gard. The dairy lets local terroir lead the fermentation process. OlssønBarbieri skipped rustic farm tropes for this packaging design. Instead, the team focused on culinary chemistry and clean laboratory craft. Artist Debora Szpilman drew delicate linework with small trembling strokes. Her art captures the microscopic life that curdles raw milk. Clean white paper backgrounds honor both fresh milk and clinical dairy rooms. Mythological tales guide each cheese name, from Fønix to the god Pan.
Tactile Round Labels and Artisanal Packaging Design
The typography pairs heritage forms with clean modern clarity. OlssønBarbieri matched an Arts and Crafts serif with a simple grotesque font. The main emblem depicts a tree trunk with sprouting leaves. It draws from the Stavanger city crest and old sardine can labels. Two label sizes define the packaging design system. Small discs wrap cut wedges, while large rounds cover whole cheese wheels. The text runs along outer arcs with neat spacing. Detailed notes on milk sources and cave aging remain easy to read. This clear typographic hierarchy keeps curved surfaces balanced and legible.
Tactile paper choices reinforce the honesty of raw milk dairy methods. OlssønBarbieri printed the labels on uncoated paper with blind circular embossing. Small rectangular tags layer across each label by hand. These secondary stickers add a deep debossed texture and embossed cheese names. The color system springs directly from cheese chemistry. Soft pink mirrors the rind of cave-aged Pan. Warm brown echoes the stout beer used on Konrad. Deep blue signals the blue mold of Fønix. Breathable waxed paper wraps complete the packaging design for top tables like Maaemo. The result turns dairy science into timeless packaging craft.
