Paprika Design crafts a functional packaging design for Montreal cafe Parka Coffee, utilizing typographic clarity and minimal labels.

Celebrating its first anniversary in Montréal, neighborhood coffee shop Café Parka collaborated with local micro-roasters to release its signature house coffee line. To complement the café's interior architecture, creative directors Louis Gagnon and Daniel Robitaille alongside lead designer Arthur Grivel at Paprika Design developed a restrained packaging design system. Rather than relying on illustrative mascot graphics or decorative patterns, the visual identity focuses on descriptive typographic clarity. Applied directly to minimal coffee bag substrates, the flexible labeling system mirrors the shop's quiet, community-focused spatial design.

Typographic Hierarchy in Modern Packaging Design

The label system relies on a rigorous architectural grid structure to display essential roast details, bean origins, process methods, farm elevation, and tasting notes. Grivel employs a clean sans-serif typeface set in varied point sizes and line weights, creating an intuitive reading hierarchy for daily coffee drinkers. Oversized numerical designations anchor key batch numbers, while precise horizontal rules divide technical telemetry into digestible visual blocks. This structural discipline across the packaging design ensures that whether applied to small single-origin espresso bags or larger retail pouches, the typography remains sharp and legible against the neutral paper background.

Material execution reinforces the functional philosophy behind the coffee line. Paprika Design specifies matte die-cut label stickers applied to tactile craft paper bags, creating subtle textural contrast between the smooth printed labels and raw paper bag surfaces. Monochromatic typography is paired with subtle earth-toned color accents to distinguish roast origins while maintaining brand consistency across retail displays. By rejecting superficial decoration in favor of structural clarity, the project demonstrates how specialty coffee packaging design can daily ritual through purposeful typographic craft, spatial awareness, and understated material discipline.
