Rui Marques designs Maria RM, an expressive variable typeface inspired by the iconic Maria biscuit with choreographed variable-width serifs.

The project originated from a distinctive culinary artifact: the five relief letterforms embossed on the traditional Maria biscuit. Rui Marques extracted these historical letter shapes and expanded them into a comprehensive variable typeface system. Rather than executing a straightforward static revival, the design explores variable-width serifs that transition fluidly across optical axes. These dynamic serifs generate a choreographed rhythmic movement between characters, giving the entire glyph set an expressive, idiosyncratic personality rooted in century-old bakery heritage. What began as a personal passion project has evolved into a fully realized typographic tool released through the Bad Quality Type foundry.

Choreographed Serifs and Variable Typeface Dynamics

Glyph construction balances the tactile quirks of industrial biscuit stamping with precise digital vector craftsmanship. High-contrast vertical stems anchor each character, while modulated serifs flare outward to create lively optical tension. In editorial applications, the variable axes enable designers to tune serif widths, stroke weights, and terminal flares in real time. This parametric adaptability allows the variable typeface to transition effortlessly from tight, dramatic headline lockups to expansive display poster grids without compromising structural integrity or individual character legibility.

Beyond its experimental serif anatomy, Maria RM functions as a versatile open-source display tool released under Creative Commons licensing. The specimen compositions deep ink traps, exaggerated bracketed curves, and tight kerning pairs that remain sharp across physical print collateral and high-resolution digital screens. The letterforms hold up remarkably well in high-impact poster designs, editorial book covers, and packaging applications. The design demonstrates how everyday vernacular packaging and historical food ephemera can be transformed into a rigorous, contemporary variable typeface for forward-thinking brand identities.
