Inside the Craft of Reserva: Typography Design by Plau
Plau engineered Reserva Script as a pointed-pen typography design system for Reserva, pairing Copperplate roots with sliced terminal cuts.
Reserva established its market presence through a visual voice that balances Brazilian warmth with rebellious irreverence. While the retail apparel label already commanded an extensive type system spanning Reserva Sans, Reserva Serif, and Reserva Display, the overarching brand ecosystem lacked gestural intimacy. Designed by Mariana Navarro and Rodrigo Saiani at Plau Design, Reserva Script fills that gap with calligraphic spontaneity. The foundry initiated the process through manual pointed-pen sketches on grid paper before digitizing the cursive forms. Flowing Copperplate loops establish classic elegance, yet Plau introduces deliberate friction by slicing terminal ends with clean, straight knife cuts. This unexpected architectural tension prevents the letterforms from settling into nostalgic decorative formality.
Pointed-Pen Calligraphy and Sliced Typography Design
The family branches across five coordinated weights: Light, Regular, Semibold, Bold, and Black. Anchored to a disciplined thirty-degree italic slant, the typography design exhibits pronounced expansion contrast that widens dramatically along downstrokes while tapering to slender connecting hairlines. Plau calibrated glyph proportions to maintain optical balance across diverse text applications. Capital letters feature generous calligraphic swashes, notably seen in the expansive loops of uppercase R and sweeping curves of uppercase S. In contrast, lowercase characters emphasize rhythm and connecting joins, allowing words to link into cohesive cursive lines without collisions. Detailed character sets incorporate full diacritics, ligatures, and tabular figures, granting Reserva consistent typographic control across digital platforms and physical packaging.
Complementing static typographic specimens, kinetic motion sequences and video documentation demonstrate how Reserva Script transitions between weights in fluid digital compositions. Across physical touchpoints, the script performs across woven apparel tags, embroidered garments, screenprinted promotional posters, and textured retail boxes. The Black weight delivers dense, ink-heavy impact for marketing headlines, while the Light cut offers airy refinement for editorial lookbooks. By anchoring historical script conventions to razor-sharp terminals, Plau proves that heritage cursive lettering can inject modern attitude into contemporary commercial typography design.
