Lundgren+Lindqvist designed the monograph for Erik Gustafsson, shaping an editorial design defined by darkroom pacing and tactile materiality.

Berlin-based Swedish artist Erik Gustafsson created Pause Between Thought and Action as a series of 40 abstract luminograms, exposing photosensitive paper to direct light, darkroom chemicals, and chance studio props. Following its public installation across Stockholm's Mariatorget subway station, Gothenburg design studio Lundgren+Lindqvist edited and designed the commemorative monograph published by Konst/ig Books. Rather than arranging the prints in a continuous gallery sequence, the studio divided the collection into four groups of ten plates. An unprinted spread precedes each segment, creating a physical pause before action that translates the artist's conceptual methodology directly into the reading experience. This deliberate editorial design rhythm breaks away from passive catalog layouts, transforming the physical act of turning pages into an intentional temporal pause.

Monograph Architecture and Editorial Design Rhythm

Typographic pacing forms the structural backbone of the publication. Lundgren+Lindqvist established a deliberate visual tension by setting the text in two contrasting typefaces. Across introductory essays and curatorial notes, the studio employs structured word repetition to induce visual glitches across the spreads. These recurring typographic stutters echo Gustafsson's experimental darkroom techniques, prompting readers to decelerate their reading cadence between visual sequences. Generous negative margins, minimal captions, and disciplined modular grids give each luminogram ample space to breathe. This restrained editorial design ensures that rich silver-gelatin tones, chromatic gradients, and raw chemical abrasions command absolute focus without interference from decorative ornamentation.

Material choices anchor the book's physical presence as a tactile art object. Lundgren+Lindqvist engineered a laminated hardcover finished with blind debossing that traces a signature abstract shape found within Gustafsson's luminogram series. For the interior pages, the studio specified a heavyweight uncoated paper stock calibrated to render darkroom tonal depth, sharp contrast, and deep black hues without reflective glare. Thread-sewn layflat binding allows dual-page spreads to open flat, preserving the continuity of full-bleed compositions. By balancing raw structural bookmaking, rhythmic pauses, and meticulous typographic hierarchy, Lundgren+Lindqvist delivers an enduring editorial design that bridges darkroom experimentation with disciplined publication craft.
