Clay Archives uses clay material design to turn everyday materials into a graphic system. Paper, labels, and clay become characters under studio light.

TianChen Deng built Clay Archives around a single constraint: clay material design where the material itself carries all the graphic weight. No illustration, no typography, no layout grid. Soft clay blocks anchor each composition. Archive labels, receipts, and torn paper fragments occupy the same visual hierarchy as the sculptural clay forms. Translucent sheets layer over solid masses, creating depth without introducing new subjects. Directional studio lighting does the rest — hard shadows fall across uneven clay surfaces, making texture carry the visual load that color or form usually carries in designed work.

Clay Material Design as Visual System

The 29-image series reveals an underlying logic. Lighting angles stay consistent across frames. Material relationships repeat and shift. The clay material design approach establishes a set of rules, then follows them without exception. What varies is arrangement — which material dominates, how much shadow falls, where the archive label sits in the frame. The system has the consistency of a typeface: each composition a different word, built from the same small set of characters. That restraint is deliberate. Deng's work sits in a specific tradition of material-led practice, close to Bauhaus foundation studies or early 20th-century object photography. The archive labels and receipts pull it toward something more personal — they suggest provenance, accumulated time. Clay suggests making. Together, they form a clay material design language that reads as both archive and active sculpture.

Featured in Behance's Best of Behance gallery, the series demonstrates that clay material design doesn't require digital tools to produce a rigorous visual system. Clay becomes the medium and the message simultaneously. The material logic holds across all 29 frames — which is what distinguishes a project from a series of images.
